Lightly Seared On The Reality Grill

Another month, another holiday and this time we’re enjoying a rather pleasant time in sunny Wales. So sunny, in fact, that we were able to spend most of Wednesday in Cardiff’s Roath Park.

There is a lake, though, so it was probably inevitable that young Macsen would want to go and take a look at the ducks. All was well and good until Macsen realised that the two girls nearby were feeding the ducks.

We had no bread

Fortunately the crisis was averted by the girls’ very pleasant young mother who happened to have a spare slice.

Following on from the previous post, this evening I have been mostly drinking Krawatencross beer. I’d never heard of it before but, since it is the Luihoeve’s beer of the month, I thought I’d give it ago.

The beer itself is fine. It’s light and refreshing, a little darker than Duvel with a slightly stronger flavour and a much lower alcohol content (5.5%). It’s the sort of beer that I would quite happily drink all night without feeling any real desire to track it down again.

I was, however, quite struck by the beer’s logo so I looked it up. It’s a cyclocross event and from the videos on the site it looks to be quite a good one. We’re too late to see it this year but it’s something worth bearing in mind for next year.

Or 2014. They have a jeugdinitiatie which accepts entrants from the age of six.

I realised a few days ago that today is Darwin Day and it occured to me that this would be a good excuse to find a sciency type gift for Macsen. Unfortunately, this is something I completely failed to achieve. What we did achieve, though, is a stonegrill at the Luihoeve.

Fun at The Forum

A week ago, we were in Geel on a mission to complete some urgent gift shopping. Once the mission was accomplished, though, we were able to relax a little and treat ourselves to some dinner at Het Forum.

Some of us were able to relax more than others…

The Maereholt restaurant in Meerhout has a large terrace looking out over a massive childrens’ play area. August, therefore, seemed a good idea to start getting the twins used to eating out.

Tripel Karmeliet I haven’t talked about beer on these pages for quite some time. However, De Met is now serving guest beers so this may change. Right now the guest beer that they have is Tripel Karmeliet from Bosteels Brewery.

As the name suggests, it’s an abbey tripel and in this case the Tripel part of the name not only refers to the in-bottle refermentation but also to the fact that the beer is brewed with three kinds of grain: wheat, oats and barley. And it’s lovely.

I’m not normally a huge fan of tripels, but this is one that I would quite happily go back to. It’s clear and has a huge creamy head and tastes light, fruity and refreshing.

I’m ready for the summer now.

Antwerp Zoo

It’s been a couple of months since I looked at what was on my camera, but I have finally gotten around to copying the photos to my PC and sorting them into folders. This, then, will probably turn out to be the first of several posts as I go through by backlog of snaps.

And where better to start with the trip we took to Antwerp zoo back in February, where Macsen discovered he had a real talent for stamping train tickets.

Irish Coffee

So after the beer, we went on for dinner. And when you’re in a French restaurant in Antwerp, what better way to round off the meal than with an authentic Irish coffee.

The blue flash in front of the chef is the flame…

And it was watching him pour the cream that convinced us to give it a go…

We were in Antwerp yesterday and, on stopping at a rather nice bar across from a French restaurant to which we later went, I was rather impressed to be served a tankard of Keizer Karel in an authentic pot.

The story, in case you hadn’t heard it is as follows…

In Olen there was an inn famed for selling good beer. When Emperor Charles visited Olen on his annual hunting expeditions, he would never forget to partake of a tankard of that good beer. He would canter up to the front door on his horse, order, and wait for the woman to come outside with the foaming brew. But she always held the tankard by its handle, so that the Emperor could never get a good grip of it.
“Woman, by next year, get thee a beer tankard with two handles, for that will make it easier.”
“Yes, my lord,” replied the woman.
Next year came and again Emperor Charles stopped off at the inn. The woman had indeed bought a beer tankard with two handles, but she held the tankard with her two hands, so that again, the Emperor was unable to get a good grip of it.
“Woman, it is still not good. By next year, get thee a beer tankard with three handles, for that will make it easier.”
Next year came and again Emperor Charles stopped off at the inn. The woman had indeed bought a beer tankard with three handles, but she held the tankard with the third handle pointing towards her breast.
“Woman,” said the Emperor, “it would be still no easier than last year, were I not to know that a third handle there is.”
And so saying, he reached under the tankard and grasped the third handle firmly.
“Behold, a clever trick there is,” proclaimed he.
And the inn where this merry story happened all those years ago still exists in Olen. And the famous three-handled tankard is still preserved there too.
