It’s been a long weekend over which we have enjoyed one of the smellier parts of parenting, and one of those parts that no-one reeally talks about. But we’ve made it and I am now heading to work where I can enjoy the comparative peace of only having to deal with three simultaneous disasters.

So here’s a video tribute to the greatest drug ever discovered. I have the feeling that I may be getting through quite a lot of this today.

Alcohol was banned at Brazilian football matches in 2003 in an attempt to tackle violence between rival football fans. But with the country hosting the 2014 World Cup, Fifa is demanding that this ban be lifted.

Initially, I was a little confused as to why Fifa would be so worried about football fans’ right to get bladdered. Then I read this:

Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor.

That clears up my question, and it also suggests a solution. Why can’t Fifa and Brazil agree to maintain the ban on beer, but allow the sale of Budweiser and other soft drinks?

Piraat Beer

Piraat Beer from Brouwerij Van Steenberge is light, fruity and goes down very well when the sun is out.

It was a little over a year ago that I signed up to Friends of Laphroaig, a social network for those of us that enjoy a decent dram. Truth be told, though, I haven’t really done much with the site apart from take advantage of the offers as they come along – and the offers have been worth taking advantage of.

However, the web team have recently revamped the site. It does look a lot nicer and they have added a host of features clearly aimed at improving the social elements of the site. The one that looks most appealing to me right now, though, is the whisky cabinet which will allow me to not only keep track of what I’ve bought but also add a tasting wheel to each.

I will, therefore, have to go back to the drinks cabinet and taste again everything that I’ve already tasted. If I don’t make it back, you can find me at plot 428189.

This weekend, the fair came to town. And with the weather as gorgeous as it was, we spent pretty much the whole time outside.

Beer

Also worth mentioning is that I tried a couple of beers that I don’t normally drink.

First up was the Tripel Karmeliet from Bosteels Brewery. This was very light, very fruity and goes down very easily in the sun. However, it does start to get a bit too sweet after a few bottles.

Much better was the Paternoster which comes from Microbrouwerij Achilles. This is a none-too-heavy Abbey style dubbel beer that goes down far too easily.

Jif lemon

Slightly worryingly, we don’t have any Jif Lemon in the house. So I’m not sure what we will be putting on our pancakes.

Following on from the previous post, this evening I have been mostly drinking Krawatencross beer. I’d never heard of it before but, since it is the Luihoeve’s beer of the month, I thought I’d give it ago.

The beer itself is fine. It’s light and refreshing, a little darker than Duvel with a slightly stronger flavour and a much lower alcohol content (5.5%). It’s the sort of beer that I would quite happily drink all night without feeling any real desire to track it down again.

I was, however, quite struck by the beer’s logo so I looked it up. It’s a cyclocross event and from the videos on the site it looks to be quite a good one. We’re too late to see it this year but it’s something worth bearing in mind for next year.

Or 2014. They have a jeugdinitiatie which accepts entrants from the age of six.

I’ve seen this floating around the interwebs a few times now. I don’t know where it originated, but it does raise a smile every time I see it.
